Seth's Story

“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth."
1 Cor 3:7

This picture was taken just a few days ago a little bit north of Taichung in the home of Seth*. Seth (standing) came to West Texas A&M several years ago to study and while there joined the Baptist Student Ministry.

There, he became a Christian. We met through some of our common friends while I was working at Trinity Baptist in Amarillo. Seth began praying that his parents would come to know Jesus. Upon returning to Taiwan, Buddy Young, the BSM director at WT, came to visit Seth and his family in conjunction with one of our short term mission teams.

After Buddy came to Taiwan and also as Seth's life grew more and more Christ-like, Seth's mother and father began to ask more and more questions about Jesus and the Bible.

Just a few weeks ago, Seth wrote Buddy and asked about his parents being baptized. Seth didn't know that I was living here in Taichung. Buddy contacted me and I was able to go and visit them last week. I realized they were very near to God, but needed help from someone who could really speak to them in their heart language. (I'm not quite there yet). So I asked if I could bring my pastor to visit with them and they readily agreed. Pastor Lu and Pastor Noah from our church in Taichung were so excited to go with me to Seth's home. So this week, we went and by God's grace and power - Seth's father repented and received Jesus as his Savior right then and there!

In the picture to the right you can see from right to left, Seth's Father and Mother (holding his niece), Pastor Lu, Pastor Peter, Seth, his nephew and myself.

Pastor Peter is from a church right down the street from their home and joined us to help get their family connected to a local church and take care of the follow up and baptism.

Now, as an aside, in order to go to Seth's house, I had to cancel my Chinese class for that day. At my next class, Professor Zhou wanted to know what I was doing. I told her the story of what happened and then she asked me to share the Gospel with her (primarily to practice doing it in Mandarin). But it has opened the door for us to talk about spiritual things that we have not had the opportunity to discuss before. She told me that she had heard something about Jesus before, but not much.
